Located on the border of the states of Haryana and Punjab, Ambala is politically and geographically divided into two sub areas: Ambala Cantt (cantonment) and Ambala City. The Ambala District is claimed to be one of the Historical famous District of Haryana State.
As per 2001 census, the total population of the district is 10,13,660 of which the male population is 5,42,366 and female 4,71,294. The population of the district forms 4.8 percent of the total population of the Haryana state. Out of every 1000 males, there are 869 females. Though Ambala falls in the Haryana state, most of the population is Punjabi.
